Bay Zoltán Nonprofit Ltd. for Applied Research participates in the project Robotics and AI for Sewer Inspection & Maintenance (PIPEON).
The ambitious PIPEON project is developing new robot and AI-based technologies for mapping, monitoring and maintaining Europe’s sewer networks using autonomous “thinking” robots and AI-based modelling and analysis tools.
The objectives of the project are:
- Build an autonomous robot capable of performing non-repetitive functional tasks in harsh, underground environments.
- To develop rigid-robotic robots that are robust by design in abrasive and corrosive environments, and capable of operating in dry and underwater conditions.
- Developing new concepts for robotic manipulators in closed pipelines, removing blockages and variable features, and installing sensors in inaccessible locations.
- Development of low computational complex sensors and ML algorithms.
- Development of risk-aware mapping and design that quantifies uncertainty.
- Establishment of digital twins of sewer systems to model sewer system degradation and performance for proactive maintenance.
- Demonstrate and prove that a paradigm shift in sewer management towards proactive maintenance is possible.
- Impact analysis on the economy, on the health and employment of low-income workers and on the environment.
